A Trip to Suburbia

What's Up?

In what was meant to be a routine jump to Charles Xavier's alternate reality, something goes terribly wrong. The X-Men end up in a universe that doesn't match up with where they're supposed to be at all. Tree-lined streets, white picket fences, big cookie-cutter houses. They're in a very idyllic suburban neighborhood outside of New York City, and mutants don't exist. Their lives here are mundane, marked by stupid HOA arguments, shuttling kids around, and remembering everything on their grocery lists.

And after an unexpected message from Ambrose via the Siege Perilous shard, they realize they're stuck for the time being. Ambrose promises that they'll return before too long, but the alignment needs to be right and he needs to work out what went wrong. Sorry!! At least they know what's happening. All they have to do is pretend to be normal. That's not that hard, right?

This is just meant as a space to play lazily over the holidays! No one has mutant powers, no one has any real troubles, and everyone has a nice house (and maybe a kid or two). Outlined below are some dumb little events for each week that are unimportant but provide a bit of something to react to, if you want. Feel free to make up whatever!

Calendar

Week of December 1st: The HOA has a meeting to discuss snow removal, but it ends with an argument between two neighbors about the height of fences. Once back on track, they ask for volunteers to shovel sidewalks for the elderly.

Week of December 8th: The neighborhood has a tree-lighting ceremony in the park, and then a potluck at the local church's rec hall. There's an unofficial contest for best bread and best chili at the potluck.

Week of December 15th: The school Christmas play! Even those without children typically come, since the neighborhood is very close-knit. One child falls off the stage after a bit of too-zealous dancing, but they're ok.

Week of December 22nd: The week of Christmas! Kids are off school and most people have at least one day off work. It snows quite a bit, making for a perfect white Christmas. The power does go out on the 26th, though.

Week of December 29th: Get ready for New Years! The HOA is soliciting donations for a New Years Eve silent auction and raffle that they hold every year. It's expected everyone contribute something, even if it's small.

Week of January 5th: Ambrose is finally able to bring them all home, but not before they're all forced to take down their Christmas lights by the HOA. Christmas is over!! It's time to be serious again.

OK my current plans (that are mostly flexible) are:

Piotr is lavender married to Kitty and they have kids and dogs and cats and it's all very normal and fine. I think he might be HS gym coach??

Emma is divorced from Some Guy and has a son and triplet girls that she shares with her ex. She lives next door to Scott and is a florist. Her family is shitty but less shitty enough that she still speaks with all of them.

Emma is going to host a Christmas party at her house 😌

My vague ideas:

Kurt, the normal human man, is the local pastor at an adorable small town chapel. It's a vaguely nondenominational establishment, and the pews are full every Sunday. He wears a lot of cardigans.

Warren is the postman for the area, married to an extremely pregnant Candy Southern Worthington who teaches first grade. Their daughter is due in late January.

My ideas (in flux):

Kitty goes fully by Katherine. She has her astrophysics doctorate and teaches at a local university. She's lavender married to Piotr and they have somewhere between 3 to 5 children, mostly adopted. They have a big dog and an asshole cat named Lockheed and other animals too.

Rogue is a real estate attorney somehow. She will go by Anna Marie exclusively here, so if you didn't know her Christian name, well. Surprise. She's married to Remy in this universe and I m not sure if they have kids but I am making them keep the three cats.

Dec 1 - 7: HOA Meeting - Emma & Open

This is maybe what hell is, Emma thinks — an elderly man and a slight, birdish woman fighting about fence regulations. It feels a million times worse than being captured by Sentinels, somehow, and the mundaneness of everything heightens the annoyance by removing all the stakes. Plus, her hair is up in a claw clip, her boots have faux fur on them, and she can't even gossip in private properly without her powers.

She leans over to her neighbor, quietly saying, "Is this really the biggest problem they have here?"

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

Piotr stares at the calendar that he'd taken off the fridge, trying to make sense of what is labeled for tomorrow. Potluck. Funeral potatoes with three question marks after, in what is probably his handwriting. He turns the calendar, as if this will help him make sense of it. Obviously, it does not.

"Kitty," he says hesitantly, "I do not know what these things mean." Is he supposed to call her Kitty? He's got no idea. He also has no idea how to be as domestic as he's probably meant to be, here.

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

Kitty peeks over his shoulder and comprehends immediately. She looks around for one of their kids eavesdropping, but they're in school, except for the baby who is two and mercifully napping. So it's not weird for her to explain,

"A potluck is like, a party where everyone brings a dish to pass. We're supposed to bring funeral potatoes, which aren't just for funerals, they're actually the best thing on earth. We can do this. It's just dumping potatoes and some cans and cheese and putting cornflakes on top." (Kitty has never made funeral potatoes in her life but it seems like a simple enough recipe.)

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

"Why are they called funeral potatoes?" He's imagining something rather dire looking, but is certain that can't be right, given the way Kitty describes it.

"...cornflakes?" Piotr is, once again, confused. "This is a normal thing to make?"

"It's one of those dishes that you bring to people's houses after someone dies. Like funerals. So funeral potatoes. I always thought it should be like, Sunday potatoes, I feel like that'd be more appropriate."

She pulls up a picture of the casserole on her phone and shoves it in Pitor's face. "Yeah, as a crunchy topping. It's really good, I promise."

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

"Ah," Piotr starts, because that does at least make sense to him. He barely startles as the phone is shoved in his face, peering at the picture there.

"It seems strange, but I trust you. You know what you are doing, so I will help however you tell me to."

Not that he wouldn't let most of the X-Men boss him around, but...

"...you are not too uncomfortable here, are you? With our situation?"

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

The easy acquiescence and trust makes Kitty smile. She sets about gathering the ingredients from their cabinets and freezer, because as all Midwestern moms know, this is a dish conducive to being made ahead of time in rare quiet moments like this one. This is never knowledge Kitty had thought she would need or use, before. She’d run so far from her roots that going back to them does feel strange. But she shakes her head anyway, busying herself with opening cans of soup.

“I’m not. It’s strange, for sure. But. You know. It’s just one world. And we kinda seem happy here?”

It is in fact a question, that she levels up at Piotr, to gauge if he is in fact more uncomfortable than happy.

Dec 8 - 14: Piotr and Kitty at Home

Watching curiously, Piotr does his best to try to mostly stay out of Kitty's way. He's got no idea about how much or little she knows about making these potatoes, but she seems confident enough. And he's clearly ready to help, if asked or told what to do.

"We do seem happy. And honestly my life has been so... strange that it is hard for me to feel much discomfort at something as little as this."

"Well yeah." Kitty flits around the kitchen, pulling a real recipe up on her phone and wordlessly handing Piotr a few cans of cream of onion soup and a can opener so he can open them. She could probably open them, but it's a little effort that she'd rather spend grating a whole lot of cheese.

"But I'm sorry you're stuck here and married to me, of all people." She doesn't explain why. He knows about the other universes.
