BACK TO SCHOOL (AGAIN)
After more than a month stranded in an alternate reality, the X-Men's Blue and Gold teams return home to the Xavier Institute, where class was already back in session despite half of the teachers being AWOL. You've all got a lot to catch up on, so let's get to it!

Both Scott and Laura are happy to be back home where everything is familiar. Scott is IMMEDIATELY stressed out by all of the work that piled up (even though everyone was doing just fine managing things without him) while Laura spends exactly 20 minutes stalking around refamiliarizing herself with scents before going to sleep for a long time in her attic room.

Teddy Berge was the only one on his squad who didn't go home, and lied about it because he doesn't want them asking questions about his family. Everything Is Cool And Fine. He bonded with [VOLUNTEER A] while they were both stuck at the mansion. (Pax noticed and is a bit jealous that Teddy has a new best friend.)
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? Braith Lilly's family was disappointed that they seemingly made no progress in controlling their powers. The Lilly family is accepting of mutants so Braith feels like they can't complain when others have it worse, but it was pretty hurtful that their cousins wouldn't stop commenting on how "gross" their translucent skin is.
Who got into an explosive fight (physical or verbal) with another student (and did they mean it when they were asked to apologize)? Esther Khong, known to be sharp-tongued and critical, got into it with [VOLUNTEER B] in the school library, and unintentionally unleashed her psychic chains on them in a heated moment. This forced a memory exchange where Esther saw [memory of choice], and the other person saw Esther discovering her hometown friends hanging out at their favourite In-N-Out without inviting her. She broke the connection, stuttered out an apology (genuine), and fled the library without her book bag.
Who experienced a complete romantic drama from first kiss to breakup in the past 40 days? Sidney Pridemore is afraid he might be gay now because of a Danger Room Moment with Tyrese Hahn, but completely avoided thinking about it by fixating on Tyrese's cute girlfriend instead. When they broke up, Sidney started dating Marlowe Healy the very next day, which caused considerable drama in their friend groups. Esther told him he's just a "rebound" and "being used", and Sidney's been trying to prove her wrong by being the perfect boyfriend, i.e. just doing whatever Marlowe tells him to do.
Who was hurt by their mentor "abandoning" them and now requires a five-issue arc before that relationship can be repaired? Pax Perrine, who had to pretend to not be a mutant for the entire two weeks they were home. While they got through the holidays without hurting anyone, it was stressful that Scott was NOT just a phone call away when he PROMISED that he'd only ever be a phone call away and Pax just kind of feels like maybe they're not that important to the X-Men, who are always off having exciting adventures???? Pax is now passive-aggressively refusing to speak more than single syllables to Scott.
Who stepped up and took care of the squad in their mentor's absence? Clemence Kadi, who can be unexpectedly kind when she isn't being catty and gossipy. She was the person that Pax called while they were trapped at home, and she made a point of having heart-to-hearts with Teddy, Braith and Esther when she noticed they seemed down. (Only Braith opened up to her, though.) She is not happy about Sidney/Marlowe but is trying 🙂sooooooo hard🙂 to be supportive of her friend (Marlowe, not Sidney). Clemence was also the last person assigned to be squad leader before Scott disappeared, and held onto that position the entire time with surprisingly little pushback.

Teacher Mentor: Emma Frost
General Vibe: It'ssssss middling. They remained close as a team with no real internal drama, but there were a lot of Attitude Problems.
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family? Nico Lau and Amadeus Quiggle remained at school, while the rest of their squad went home to their families. Nico was particularly sullen about this, so in an attempt to cheer him up Amadeus was a mean troublemaker. Nico seemed more annoyed by this than anything else. (Feel free to say Amadeus cause some trouble for any number of your kids!)
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? Aline Chevalier - she felt more isolated at home than ever, and since being home her family has a charming new set of fears, many of which revolve around her. She knows it's not their fault, but she was pretty weepy on returning. [Volunteer A] found her tucked away somewhere in the institute, and managed to calm her down. Opal Owens eventually found the pair and shooed them away from Aline. She can handle this, thanks.
Who got into an explosive fight (physical or verbal) with another student (and did they mean it when they were asked to apologize)? Amadeus got into multiple fights (including one with Esther Khong), and only genuinely apologized if the other person seemed truly emotionally upset by the interaction. Once again, feel free to claim the trouble maker :)
Who experienced a complete romantic drama from first kiss to breakup in the past 40 days? Melville Ojokolo, seeing all of Sidney's interesting romantic drama, attempted to have his own romance arc with questionable success. He decided Nina Rosenow was the perfect candidate, and spent much of the break trying to woo them with chocolates, flowers, and things they actually like by doggedly harassing their friends to learn about them. Up to you if they actually were into this, or are still trying to fend off this stupid boy who is convinced he has a crush, even though he just sort of manifested it for life experience purposes.

Esper Jones cannot believe that Emma went on a cool adventure, was gone for forever, and barely even tried to check in with them!!! Though she still thinks Emma is, regrettably, very cool and who she wants to model herself after her, she'll be pouty any time Emma tells her to do anything. She thought they were important to you, Emma.
Who stepped up and took care of the squad in their mentor's absence? Meville tried to keep the peace, particularly with problem child Amadeus, but completely failed to affect his behavior at all (which was a blow to his self esteem. He wants to be team leader...). After a few weeks of sulking, Nico finally got Amadeus in line, and convinced Opal to not call Aline's parents to tell them to keep their bad feelings in check. Come on now, Opal.

Teacher Mentor: Manuel de la Rocha
General Vibe: In Manuel's absence, the Paragons were feeling out of sorts, less confident, and a little lost. While he's been teaching them how to control their emotions, and their powers by extension, not having him there to guide them during training or to act as a safety net threw them off. The sole exception to this is Nina Rosenow, who's never needed his help with her powers and stepped up to keep the squad on-task. Manuel may've been gone, but his schedule wasn't! So...that's something?
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family? Kit Zuriaga was told not to come home by their parents, Wyatt Coy didn't want to go home to face his former peers, and Nina Rosenow chose to stay to keep an eye on them since Manuel was missing in action. Again. While not technically the leader of the squad, she did take it upon herself to keep them busy to prevent malaise and sulking. It mostly worked and they spent a lot of time together during the holidays.
When Nina wasn't looking, Kit gave Wyatt a stick and poke tattoo of a ladybug.
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? Veronica Milanović got into an argument with her brother while she was at home and set the Christmas tree on fire. Nobody was hurt but she was absolutely mortified. Nobody tell Mr. de la Rocha! You're not allowed!! She returned to school in a sour mood and has been bothering everyone to go to the Danger Room with her because students aren't allowed to go in alone or without some form of supervision.
She's been pushing herself entirely too hard and her control has actually gotten worse instead of better as a result. She's not spiraling, you're spiraling.

Carrie Anne Carman got into a fight with [Volunteer A] that was mostly screaming and hair-pulling after she found them napping in a common area and merged with them without permission for several hours. Look! You weren't even using your body! Stop being so weird!! She absolutely did not mean it when she was forced to apologize by Xavier but she has been somewhat preoccupied with them ever since. ...they're just so neat.
Who experienced a complete romantic drama from first kiss to breakup in the past 40 days? Nina Rosenow caught the attention of Melville Ojokolo, who was seeking a 'crush'. She accepted his gifts (who doesn't like flowers and chocolate?) and admiration happily, but didn't return his supposed affection until he showed interest in her violin-playing and the two shared a rant about trying to wrangle their teammates in the absence of their mentors.
...oh no, he's cute, actually. :|
She now makes sure her eyes are his favorite color whenever they see each other. Embarrassing.

More than anyone, Veronica has been leaning on Manuel to keep her fiery powers in check, both directly (though his empathy) and indirectly (through the motivation not to disappoint him). So his prolonged absence hit her hard. While she says she's not upset with him, she blames his absence for what feels like several weeks of backsliding with her powers and she's now working hard to try to prove she doesn't need his help. Still, his opinion means a lot to her and she doesn't want him to realize that she's been struggling.
Who stepped up and took care of the squad in their mentor's absence? Nina Rosenow. While she's not officially the squad leader, she's the oldest and the most put together and has boundless confidence, so stepping into the role wasn't difficult for her. She's been diligently looking out for her younger squad members, making them practice the techniques Manuel has been teaching them to help control their emotions and their powers, and generally acting like she's their teacher instead of their peer. Vesta has also been trying extra hard to take care of the others emotionally, checking in with them and coordinating group outings beyond training and homework sessions. She even made snacks and didn't poison anyone!

SQUAD CHECK-IN: The Fellowship
Teacher Mentor: Kitty Pryde
General Vibe: We're okay!! Not very productive; they didn't make much headway at all on Kitty-assigned projects, but after a few weeks of hiccups, they're united and ready to be a team again.
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family?
Rasmus. His family is German, and his parents didn't trust him to fly on a plane because last time he did that, he caused an international incident when he wondered if he could control the flight from his seat. He could. He's probably never allowed to fly again. He spent the holiday at the Institute making weird little robots with little hats and Christmas lights deliver the Christmas dinner to the tables of people who stayed behind. One of the little robots even found [Character A] alone in their room and gave them Christmas room service. Rasmus followed and explained the tech for a while to the other student, honestly whether they wanted to or not.

Zita thought that her band playing at her hometown Christmas Parade would be cute. It was supposed to be. But the sound constructs she was using aesthetically hit a carriage horse with real force (the horse is fine) and caused a panic. Her parents bothered her about this, and about going to a real college and getting a real job for the rest of the holiday.

During about week 3 when everyone was drifting away from each other, and no one really wanted to do teamwork without a leader there, Bowie surprised them all with a DnD one-shot that they sat everyone down to play. It was a really cute adventure to rescue Kitty and Lockheed from her office, full of traps and double-crossing NPCs. Almost everyone complained, especially Sardinia and Zita, but they got into it, and it did work. They emerged much closer, and Kitty's coming into just a LOT of new character names and inside jokes.

Sardinia got very protective over the kids in Kitty's absence, and stole/also destroyed the [valued item] of [Character B] when she merely THOUGHT she heard them saying something mean about Rasmus. She's had a bit of a hair trigger since then, and did not apologize. It's also possible her victim doesn't even know what happened, because she stopped time, and it just looked like she strolled by.

Tyrese and Marlowe famously broke up shortly after he had an (unrelated) moment with Sidney in the Danger Room. Tyrese has been quiet and glowering a lot at them both since then, and is trying very hard to be a bigger person and not manipulate the probability that they'll break up in weeks. He's predicted about two months of a shelf life on this relationship.
Who was hurt by their mentor "abandoning" them and now requires a five-issue arc before that relationship can be repaired? Unfortunately, Kitty really is the only thing that currently stands between Buster and a villain arc right now, and her leaving reinforced a lot of abandonment. His room is currently full of Extremely dangerous blueprints and theories, and he's not going to let Kitty talk him out of them without some work. He will tease them a lot and end with "but you wouldn't understand," which will drive her insane.

General Vibe: As the most dangerous kids in school, it could've been a LOT worse, ok.
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family? Willa Liu. Her girlfriend from home broke up with her, and she was feeling extra poison about it, so she decided to inflict that on everyone in the Institute instead. No one got sick. Probably.
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? Catch Eastridge, who with their powers, decomposed the whole holiday ham and two of the salads. They've taken to wearing gloves just like their mentor, and all of the team got them a pair for the holiday.
Who got into an explosive fight (physical or verbal) with another student (and did they mean it when they were asked to apologize)? I bet you thought I was going to say Caspian! It wasn't! He's grown a lot in his powers over the year. The real answer to this is Maple Crescenzo who, bored and anxious, kept exploding lightbulbs and similar above people's heads. She was publicly shunned, probably, for at least a few hours while everyone worked in the dark and tried to find more.

Effie Estrada healed [Character C bc it's the same comment] after an accident and accidentally took a little of their life force. But it was a particularly touching moment. She literally felt sparks (it might have just been their vitality.) Character C was really impressive. She's doodled their face in her binders and can't stop thinking about them. This is mostly culminating in terminal yearning.

Who stepped up and took care of the squad in their mentor's absence? Caspian did. Ever since he got it in his head he could get kicked out of school if he makes people fight more, he's been more level-headed and responsible and used that influence to remind the rest of the squad why they, too, are here. This doesn't mean he didn't get involved with the other squad shenanigans. He just knows how to stand very far away, now.
Anything else? I never bothered to give them official personalities outloud but they exist in my brain. Sorry this is all over the place I needed to get it out of my brain at midnight. Plot here!

General Vibe: Actually, yes, they are behaving! None of them got in trouble at all, somehow.
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family? Sukie Kanniard and Holiday Chen both stayed at school over winter break (Sukie because her parents are on a months-long cruise in Europe, Holiday because her parents are getting divorced and she didn’t want to pick who to spend Christmas with). The two girls are now particularly bonded and have figured out a bunch of ingenious ways to combo move their powers together.
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? The usually gregarious Gailyn Bailey has been subdued since returning home from winter break, and her ongoing prank war with [Student Volunteer] is on indefinite pause. Shortly after the X-Men return from their multiversal jaunt, Joey Bailey approaches Scott Summers to let him know that his aunt Jean Grey did not return home for Thanksgiving or Christmas and is not answering his grandmother’s calls, leaving the entire family distraught over her whereabouts. Any attempt to contact Jean at her old phone number is delivered, but goes unanswered.
Who got into an explosive fight (physical or verbal) with another student (and did they mean it when they were asked to apologize)? Nobody was instigating, because they are all behaving, but I might pick up someone else’s volunteer slot if anyone wants to bully his children.
Who experienced a complete romantic drama from first kiss to breakup in the past 40 days? Nima Vatankhah is equally taken with Effie Estrada after their touching moment, but is also painfully oblivious about it.

They were much better-behaved without Remy here than they usually are, although they are all also jazzed that he’s back. He has mixed feelings about this but he’s trying not to think about it too much (is he... a bad influence?).

Although Sukie is and always has been the team’s strategist, Callahan Eastridge has stepped up into a leadership role during Remy’s absence, and the rest of the team now naturally defers to him both in training exercises and also just about and around. He’s also been a little distracted since returning from spring break by his sibling Catch, who is struggling with controlling their powers. The rest of the Rapscallions have also taken this on themselves, and have been spending a lot of time with the Varmints although they’re trying to be kind of surreptitious about it.

General Vibe: It’s been a rough one for the Novices!
Who didn't go home to celebrate the holidays with their family? Justine Fitzwater stayed behind not because she has anything particularly difficult going on at home but because she thought it would be fun to bond with the other students who were staying at the school over break. And she was right! She was extremely up in everyone’s business all break, and grew particularly close with Teddy Barge of the Vanguards. She got everyone who was at the school for winter break particularly thoughtful holiday gifts.
Who did go home for the holidays and came back to school feeling worse? After a mostly uneventful winter break, Blythe got into a big fight with her parents when she informed them that she is intending on joining the X-Men’s active roster after she graduates rather than attending college. Although she still means to complete a degree remotely and assured them that several of her teachers did the same thing, the Corvettos are not pleased with the development and have threatened to pull her out of school entirely. Professor Xavier was able to smooth things over with them for now, but Blythe continues to be moody and sullen about the possibility.

Star Rodriguez got into an incredibly heated argument with [STUDENT VOLUNTEER A] about the finale of Stranger Things over dinner the night before the group returned from Suburbia, and in rehashing the dispute to several recently returned teachers she accidentally spoils the ending for them.
Who experienced a complete romantic drama from first kiss to breakup in the past 40 days? Marlowe Healy, as previously noted, is now at the center of a belabored omnidirectional love triangle. It is never clear what exactly her motivations are, as she does still seem deeply hung up on Tyrese. But she’s also the one who broke up with him? The day after the dramatic break-up, she started dating Sidney Pridemore, who she does not seem to actually like that much but is constantly making out with in semi-public locations. Also, no drama or break-up involved, but Blythe and Jonah are dating now. Their relationship is extremely anodyne and is mostly evidenced by the pair now holding hands in the hallways between classes, but Illyana is still irritated about it. Everybody stop kissing! She has things to teach you!

Illyana’s perfect angel and favorite child Ashley Pendergast coped particularly poorly in her absence, and has reverted to her loner ways. Although Ashley returns to magic class basically immediately, she is struggling a little not only with Illyana’s prolonged absence, but also the fact that the rest of her team didn’t want to hang out with her when they weren’t forced to. In order to avoid both magic lessons and her teammates, she’s been spending a lot of time hanging around the classroom of [TEACHER VOLUNTEER B] and insists she’s just taken a particular interest in their subject.
Who stepped up and took care of the squad in their mentor's absence? Jonah has been attempting to wrangle everyone for weekly meditation sessions, but without Illyana around, the group has naturally drifted apart and hasn’t really been hanging out that much in the time the X-Men have been gone.
Anything else? Illyana’s beloved pet microraptor, Toothbrush, has been free roam living in the manor since she left. Although Illyana is able to wrangle the dinosaur back into her room the first day she’s back in 367, there are signs of her wild winter break all over the mansion. For example, one book which [VOLUNTEER C] has been waiting a month to be able to reference is torn to shreds, and [VOLUNTEER D] has the dubious honor of finding several dead mice and lizards in their shoes (Illyana insists that this means Toothbrush trusts you).
