AN UNEXPECTED CONSULTATION

Since returning with the Blue Team to the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, the man that prefers to be known as the Siege Perilous (but is more often called Ambrose) has mostly been keeping to himself. While it's common to see him disappear into Professor Xavier's office for hours at a time and he can occasionally be caught passing through the kitchen to dig through the fridge for leftovers, he's otherwise been a reserved and unobtrusive presence. Perhaps even a hermit.

On Monday evening, though, his voice enters the mind of [Character A] and asks them to gather the Blue Team and select members of the Gold Team for a 'consultation' in his room. While this is unexpected, the man is insistent and they eventually yield, gathering the others and bringing them to Ambrose. The man has fully made himself at home, it seems, and the room is in a state of chaos when they arrive. The massive mirror stands in one corner, its shattered pieces still hanging in the air. The desk is hidden beneath papers covered in dense scribblings that seem to be a blend of arcane symbology, mathematical calculations, and incomprehensible diagrams. The bed is unmade. The floor is scattered with dirty clothes and open books. The man himself is dressed in clothes that appear to be on loan from Paige Guthrie -- did they approve this or did the garments just disappear from the laundry room? Who can remember, really.

Ambrose greets them without much enthusiasm or performative warmth, telling them that he has news.

First, that he watched the events in Phoenix through Kurt Wagner's eyes and came to a realization that there are even more anomalies here than he'd initially thought. Several members of Gold Team, those gathered in this room, also originate from another reality. He explains that, in an attempt to honor their newfound collaboration, he wanted to inform them directly before placing their marks without warning as before.

He's quick to dismiss any protests about this, but does reassure them that he's fine-tuned his process and they won't have to endure any of the side-effects that the others did. Not unless they're particularly keen to connect with their other realities and ask him to dismiss his magical protections, of course. Either way, welcome aboard!

Second, that he believes he's on the verge of figuring out a new way to investigate their realities without actually sending anyone back. He requests that Illyana Rasputin, Kitty Pryde, and Scott Summers lend them their expertise in this endeavor. It's unclear what he thinks Scott's 'expertise' actually is...but he seems adamant. Perhaps he's thinking of another version of them? Regardless, he explains that if the realities align just so, he thinks they should be able to jump into echoes of a given reality's past and live through the days leading up to their passage through the Siege Perilous. He's hopeful that they'll be able to learn something useful.

...And that's all! Ambrose is willing to discuss everything that he's said for a while, but soon dismisses them all from his room so he can return to his work. The man doesn't seem to have much of a social battery.

Before Illyana Rasputin can depart, he stops her and asks her if they've met before and if she has something of his. He's claims to be almost certain, but can be talked down or misled on the matter without much effort if she so chooses to try. The man really is scatter-brained...

Paige very politely asks if her mark can not be on her tongue. Please. She is trying so hard to look very calm and cool about this request.

Laura adds that she thinks they shouldn't have marks at all. Can't Ambrose just remember what dimension they're from without branding them with it?

Kurt asks if Ambrose will warn him next time he, uh, decides to hitch a ride in Kurt's head.

This seems to surprise Ambrose...but he acquiesces, promising that he'll let Kurt know the next time he intends to borrow his perceptions. After a moment of pause, though, he asks if the man is aware that Charles and Emma frequently access his mind as well?

Emma, who has spent the entire conversation looking annoyed, asks what he thinks will happen if there are so many anomalies and they're all sent back? It will clearly be very disruptive to this universe.

If Ambrose registers Emma's annoyance, he doesn't show it, though he does seem to consider her point. He acknowledges that at a certain number of anomalies he might have to start making assessments about who it makes sense to send back and who it makes sense to keep in this reality, but he doesn't think the situation is so dire yet. After all, there aren't even twenty of you.

Kitty still has a headache and therefore also looks wildly annoyed during this session.
She'd like to know more about this plan to revisit their other selves' pasts. How will that work? Could it possibly change anything in that reality in the future (something she's very scared of lately,) or could they get stuck in those realities, because this seems like a pretty unsneaky way to get them stuck in their alternate realities.

Seemingly getting impatient, Ambrose sighs and reiterates that they would be visiting the echo of another reality. So long as they do this right, it wouldn't be able to impact any alternate realities, but it would allow them to investigate thoroughly. That 'so long as they do this right' part is why he's requesting her assistance in his calculations. Or is this reality's Kitty Pryde not up to the task?

Bobby says that Ambrose should come by and borrow some more clothes. Not that the overshorts aren't a good look!!

Ambrose looks Bobby up and down, considering and commenting under his breath that the X-Man is taller than him but that he can always roll up the pants. Yes, he accepts. He will come by. These overshorts have very small, very useless pockets.

First off, Warren's not a big fan of this. He'd really like to be left out if possible. His life is none of Ambrose's business. He's too old for reality bending shenanigans.

Ambrose looks taken aback at the accusation of 'shenanigans', but offers to send Warren back to his correct reality now if he'd prefer to have this matter settled.

After ducking into the hallway to borrow cash from somebody, Illyana does return this man's $50 to him. Sorry!

Emma is, in a word, seething once Ambrose kicks them out. Marking some of Gold Team, observing through Kurt's eyes without his permission, dragging Scott more fully into this as though he needed an excuse. And, of course, this is just the cherry on top of the falsely apologetic appearances she has to make to smooth things over with her outing as a mutant. It's all annoying. She just needs a moment.

She pauses in the hallway as most of the others filter past her, taking a deep breath, happy for the distraction of her phone buzzing with a text. But it's from Shinobi. 'Yikes. Mug shot is hot, though. 😘'

Maybe she needs to block him, too. She looks up just in time to see Kurt, her expression flat. "And how are you doing, Liebchen?"

Kurt pushes his hair out of his face, detouring to go stand with Emma. Every time they try to reason with Ambrose, Kurt walks away feeling further from a solution. Their lives are in turmoil... and he's not even certain how much longer they'll be allowed to keep them.

"I've never have a migraine before, but," he sighs, "there is a first time for everything."
