The Dance

Emma has organized a Halloween dance for the students of Xavier's on Saturday evening, and the theme was chosen by student vote. She doesn't quite understand it, but it's Godzilla vs. Mothra, and in the spirit of really leaning into the theme, the dance is taking place in the Danger Room. The general vibe is just nighttime Tokyo, but there's a big (harmless) Godzilla and a big (harmless) Mothra that move through the edges of the dance space, and occasionally do battle far off to the side. It's all very silly, but the neon lights and street lamps give the space a nice dreamy glow. Even with the occasional sound of Godzilla's roar in the background. There are snacks, a punchbowl, bobbing for apples, a costume contest, and, of course, music so that students can actually dance.

[Student A], with their [you tell me] costume, takes 1st place in the costume contest, with runners up of [Student B] in 2nd and [Student C] in 3rd.

[Character D] catches a student trying to (lightly) spike the punch. They confiscate the alcohol. Do they have a sip (it's really cheap booze)?

She's really proud of her costume, actually. Not because it has a complicated design or took a lot of time or anything, no it's just sort of clever. Nerdy enough that she's happy, and universal enough so that everyone has a chance at getting it.

Only no one actually understands that she, clad in a 3PO protocol droid standard suit (but silver), with a little nametag that just says "it's me" is in fact supposed to be the droid they were looking for. Guesses have gone from C-3PO himself to Tinman from Wizard of Oz to just "Why are you a robot." Rasmus and Buster got it right away which, Kitty muses as she guards the punch, maybe indicates that she selected her squad a little too specifically.

"I thought it was pretty obvious." She laments, muttered, one more time, to the tune of a raised eyebrow from more kids.

"It's not," Emma supplies helpfully, appearing next to Kitty to get herself some punch. She's sporting a Sandy-from-the-end-of-Grease costume that fits her immaculately, and while her hair isn't quite as teased and large as her costume calls for, it's easy to identify who she is. Unlike her companion, being clever was nowhere on her list of needs for an outfit.

"Two of mine did get it, if that helps at all. Though, one of them was Opal, so I'm not sure that counts."

Kitty rolls her eyes sincerely. "It's not that hard for people who've seen any movies." She insists, because she really thinks it isn't. "Opal's smart. Who are you supposed to be, Catwoman?" (A bullshit question. She, too, has seen any movies.)

Emma laughs, glancing over her shoulder and offering a now filled cup of punch to Kitty.

"You have to think about it, which means it's far too much work for a costume." She doesn't actually have overly strong opinions on this, but she has to give her friend a hard time.

"Yes, Catwoman. Look how smart you are too, darling."

She takes it with a reluctant thanks, sipping mostly to see if the kids had spiked this with anything. Not yet. Thank god. She's pretty sure in their years, she would've just to show she could. Nerds were not always well-behaved teens.

"It's a lot more fun when you have to think about it. What are you talking about. People have been in Grease costumes like nine thousand times." This, too, is a light jab at best. She thinks it's cute, personally and reluctantly, that she got Scoot to do matching costumes. "Is his car gonna fly through the window at the end of the dance to carry you both off?"

Pouring her own cup before turning to settle next to Kitty, shoulder to shoulder, Emma hums. She absolutely would have spiked this punch, just to misbehave. She takes a sip, glancing over the sight in front of them. The dance is nice. The children seem to be having fun.

"Halloween isn't about using your brain. And this is Grease? I truly thought I was Catwoman." Emma attempts to feign disappointment at this alleged mix-up, but she's smiling. It is cute that she convinced Scott to match.

"Ah, if only I had telekinesis. I'm sure you could build a flying car, though."

Chaperoning is rather easier than she thought it would be, which is good.She'd criticized the kids on their taste a second ago, but they make it up with this theme. As she stands in her silver spandex, Kitty is almost relaxed, for once. Almost.

"Oh, I got it right once I saw you didn't have any cat ears." She makes a little cat ear with her finger behind her own to demonstrate. "It's a little late. You should've told me last week, and I could've snuck into the garage."

"I suppose the no ears would give it away," Emma replies before taking another sip of punch. "And of course you'd like this theme."

And then, she sighs, the sound content. She too feels almost relaxed — it feels like they've been granted a little reprieve, and she's glad that the students can just be kids. That they can just be teachers.

"The costume was actually a little last minute. Don't tell the children, but generally I don't care about Halloween."

"Thanks for agreeing to it." Kitty says, in lieu of jabbing back. Halloween was a time of truce, or whatever. She smiles a little in agreement with the sigh, too.

And then, because she hasn't completely changed, she casts extremely incredulous eyes up at her friend's remark. "Oh my god. Of course you don't like anything cool. Why don't you like Halloween??"

"Well, I couldn't disappoint the children," Emma says matter-of-factly, bumping her shoulder against Kitty's.

Her friend's offense at her opinions on Halloween makes her laugh as she meets her gaze. She could easily argue against not liking anything cool, but she'll focus on the question.

"I don't dislike it, I just mostly don't care. I have no nostalgia for it."

"Aiming for their favorite, I see." Kitty says, bumping shoulders back.

She knows that not having nostalgia for something most likely means this was another thing Emma wasn't allowed or encouraged to experience as a kid. But today, this isn't an argument for Kitty, and she doesn't stoop to any mushy emotions like pity or whatever. She just nods, matter-of-fact. "I mean. I think that just means we should create memories now around it, so you you'll be nostalgic for it when you're 99 and can't fit into your Sandy costumes. It's a holiday where you get to dress as dramatically as you like and everyone thinks it's fun. This should be like. Exactly your thing."

"I'm already a frontrunner for a lot of the school." It's unclear whether this is the truth or not, but regardless, she looks pleased.

Finishing her punch, Emma goes to get a bit more, letting Kitty get through her (correct) thoughts about her feelings on Halloween. She's glad she's not going to press the reason.

"I dress dramatically whenever I want. And I have some good memories with you all when we were young."

She settles back next to her companion.

"This is shaping up to be a decent enough memory."

"You're not." Kitty returns, because she has to. She stays sipping her punch, not looking overly insistent on her point. She takes Emma's as well. When she was younger, Kitty had all but insisted her new friends celebrate this holiday with her. That hasn't changed, apparently.

"It's pretty good." She acquiesces. "Obviously it's not quite the time I stole us all beer and then puked into my Gandalf beard about it for my troubles, but. The night's young." She wrinkle her nose at this particular memory, although she doesn't feel any shame connected, particularly. She just remembers how bad the beard looked.

Emma laughs again, completely breezing past Kitty's (very incorrect) assertion about her not being beloved. It's not hard to remember the night she's talking about, and a refresher from Kitty's perspective is even more funny.

"We have to be good influences," she says, not sounding like she means it completely. Personally, she thinks a bit of misbehavior is good. "But I'm sure the children would love to hear that story. You looked so miserable."

Kitty frowns, maybe a little for comedic effect, and grasps on to Emma's shoulder like maybe she anticipates the other girl going to inform them now. "Well you can't tell them that." She clarifies, because part of her knows that Emma would. "They have to think I'm responsible and boring."

"Why not? It's good for them to know you all are fallible."

To be a little more obnoxious, Emma leans fully into Kitty's hands, tilting her head towards her with a sigh.

"Although I wonder if Buster would be less inclined to listen to you then. That might be a bit of a problem."

"Fallible, but still like. Respectable." Kitty goes intangible for just one moment, so that Emma may fall into nothing, but she doesn't actually want her friend to fall into the punch table, so she re-materializes quickly.

"We absolutely cannot have Buster go full supervillain. And he doesn't respect any of you." It's no slight. They just couldn't really follow his train of thought.

Though Emma is ready to potentially be dropped by Kitty, she's very thankful when the other girl is quick enough to spare her from having to try to save herself.

"You, respectable? That's a little bit of a stretch." As usual, there's no bite in this.

"Buster won't go full supervillain. He's terrifyingly smart, but he's kind at his core. I think we'll be alright, even if he knows you've puked into a Gandalf beard."

Kitty makes up for her former kindness by resting her chin on Emma’s shoulder and digging in a little, which doesn’t actually do a whole lot to prove her respectability.

“No, I know.” She smiles, because Buster is obviously her favorite. Or at least one of them. “He’s a good kid. He’s helping with a project for Remy, but it’s along the same lines as the demutanator. So he’s sort of coming full circle. It’s cute.”

Even as Kitty's chin digs into her shoulder, Emma uses her free hand to gently wrap around in her head in a momentary, pseudo-hug.

"He is. And you haven't told him exactly what his project is for, have you?"

Mollified, Kitty lifts her chin, but lays her cheek on her friend's shoulder for the little hug instead.

"I just said it's still an area of interest to us," she admits, and then her head snaps up, eyes narrowed a little to get ahead of anything Emma is implying here. "And it's not going to be a collar design anymore, it's a little choker, so I think we can leave it there."

Emma can't help but laugh again, shifting to look at Kitty with amusement written all over her face.

"Oh, how demure."

And she will leave it there, actually, because she's feeling somewhat generous.

"I'm glad you're roping the children into some of your projects, though. It lifts some of the burden from you."
