BACK TO SCHOOL (AGAIN)

After more than a month stranded in an alternate reality, the X-Men's Blue and Gold teams return home to the Xavier Institute, where class was already back in session despite half of the teachers being AWOL. You've all got a lot to catch up on, so let's get to it!

Emma, who is attempting to make sense of another teacher's notes on her classes (they did a terrible job, of course), doesn't even flick her eyes up as Illyana enters. Even though she doesn't know when the other woman is approaching or what she's thinking, she's become accustomed enough to her that this isn't surprising in any way.

Her words still make her laugh a little, though. "They're children, of course they're 'deep in their dramas.'" She finally lifts her gaze.

"Kissing is very serious business, darling."

"It is not that serious," Illyana says, although she isn't entirely surprised to hear Emma sympathize with the teenagers on this front. "In another month they will have forgotten their feelings altogether and have brand new ones."

Her annoyance at the mess of her classes is forgotten for the moment. Emma sets the papers aside, and places her elbows on her desk, interlacing her fingers and resting her chin on them as she watches Illyana.

"Very likely, and then we'll really have a mess on our hands. This is probably better, honestly."

Her mind reaches out momentarily, even though it still remains a little uncomfortable to stretch herself. This really is going to get messy.

"Have you never had a crush?"

"Not like the children do," she says, kicking her legs up over the side of the chair as she settles in. "But I did not have such amusements when I was their age."

She suddenly finds herself unwilling to answer any further follow-up questions about her own love life or childhood and decides to steer the conversation back to her original complaint.

"I would not mind their little romances, if they were not so wholly occupied with them. Aren't the dances enough drama already?"

"Adults can have crushes." But for the moment, Emma doesn't push any further than this.

It's difficult not to smile a little — she finds Illyana terribly amusing, even when she's deflecting. She really is part of the team, even if she'd argue otherwise.

"Things like that feel all-consuming when you're bad at emotional regulation. Some of them do thrive on the mess though. And I hope you don't think you've seen the worst of dance drama already. Prom hasn't happened yet."
